Every May 22nd, the Bitcoin world marks "Bitcoin Pizza Day," commemorating what's widely considered the first documented real-world purchase made with Bitcoin: two pizzas, paid for with 10,000 BTC.
On May 18, 2010, a Florida-based programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the Bitcointalk forum offering 10,000 BTC to anyone willing to order him two pizzas, since he didn't want to handle the payment or delivery logistics himself. On May 22, 2010, another forum user in England arranged for two Papa John's pizzas to be delivered to Hanyecz in exchange for the agreed 10,000 BTC, completing what's now recognized as the first known instance of Bitcoin being exchanged for a physical, real-world good.
At the time, Bitcoin had no established market price at all; it was worth so little that Hanyecz later said he considered it a completely fair trade for a couple of pizzas. This wasn't a bad deal by the standards of the moment. It only became famous in hindsight, as Bitcoin's price rose over the following years and those 10,000 BTC would have grown to represent a life-changing sum, had they been kept rather than spent.
Beyond the dollar value in hindsight, Pizza Day matters historically because it was a proof of concept: it demonstrated Bitcoin could function as an actual medium of exchange for a real-world good between two strangers who'd never met, using nothing but the network itself to settle the trade, months before any exchange gave Bitcoin a formal market price.
Hanyecz has spoken publicly many times since and has consistently said he doesn't regret the trade, describing it as a fun, memorable experiment that helped demonstrate Bitcoin actually worked as usable money at a time when almost nobody was testing that idea in practice.

It earned a permanent spot in Bitcoin's history as the first real-world purchase, mostly because of how the story looks in hindsight rather than anything special at the time.
